Punk - Beerbellyjake
First of all, I hate how utterly unknown this song is. Like, I can find almost nothing on it. It’s so bad that when you search it up, THIS page on my site is a result.
Now I know Jake probably has some more bangers, but I really like this song for seemingly no reason. I think I’m drawn to it because of my love for Alex G, and way back during the early days of the pandemic, I was really attached to his music. I guess Punk is reminiscent of that era, but there’s something else about it. The lyrics I can barely make out, the solemn voice, and even the release date of the album make me feel like something I’ve missed and something I’ve experienced. I mean, I can say this about a lot of indie music but the fact that I kinda just stumbled across this song one day and it’s so unknown makes me feel almost unwell for liking it. And what’s irritating me is the fact that I can’t pinpoint.
I could just boil it down to nostalgia, you know, because of the likeness to a lot of things I used to listen to and even the era of when it was released, but I feel like I need to describe this feeling beyond that. Maybe if I could verify what the lyrics are? Maybe it really does sound like another song that I really used to like, but I can’t seem to recognize what it is. It is really similar to Sometimes by Alex G, but there has to be something else I’m missing.
I like to think about how life was before the pandemic when I listen to it. Granted, I was really young, but the atmosphere was so different then. Maybe it was my state of mind. I think about the rays of sunlight shining through my blinds in the morning, staying up late reading fanfiction, the art community at the time, and animation memes… the way outside was different. I know the song doesn’t necessarily reflect on any of these themes, but that’s how back then sounded to me. I guess it really is nostalgia, huh.
